About the South Carolina State Fair:
The South Carolina State Fair, attracting over 600,000 annual visitors, is the largest event in the State of South Carolina. A fun, family-oriented event, the South Carolina State Fair promotes the material, educational, agricultural and industrial interests of the state and has been recognized as one of the top 50 fairs in the United States and a Top 20 Event in the Southeast.
Exhibits include livestock and agriculture, flowers, baked and canned goods, needlework and quilting, fine art and more, as well as commerce, education and history exhibits. Grandstand entertainment features world class performers as well as local entertainment and school performances. Midway rides and carnival games add to the fun.
Established and operated by the South Carolina Agricultural and Mechanical Society, the first South Carolina State Fair was held in 1869 on Elmwood Avenue in the City of Columbia. By 1904, the Fair had outgrown the Elmwood Avenue location and was moved to its present location along Bluff Road. Today, the fairgrounds include six exhibit buildings offering approximately 125,000 square feet of exhibit space.
The South Carolina Agricultural and Mechanical Society is a non-profit organization that is governed by a board of directors including representatives from each of the state's congressional districts. Throughout the past decade, the South Carolina State Fair has provided over $3 million to the community in scholarship endowments and non-profit organization grants. Although still considered South Carolina's State Fair, the South Carolina State Fair is neither owned nor operated by the state and does not receive state funding.
