June in the Southeast - Travel Tips for Visitors
June Events, Weather, Packing and More

By Sheridan Alexander, About.com

Why Visit the Southeast in June?
For warmer weather travel, often without the soaring temperatures and high humidity levels of other summer months in most of the Southeast, June is a good bet for late spring and early summer fun. The beginning of June offers spring-like weather in many locations, while late June often feels like the steamy Southern summer season has indeed arrived.

Because many schools do not begin summer vacation breaks until mid-June, crowds in many spots are not quite as heavy as during July and early August, making for pleasant sightseeing and other activities. Also, in many locations, hotel and vacation rental rates are slightly lower during much of June compared to the higher seasonal prices of July and August.

Festivals and Events
June brings a number of fun festivals to kick off the summer season including beach festivals, outdoor summer entertainment events, food festivals and more. For details about some of the wonderful June events, visit this round-up of selected June Festivals and Special Events.

June Weather
June takes us from spring into summer and is often one of the most pleasant of the warmer months in the Southeast. High average temperatures tend to range in the low to upper 80s with low average temperatures in the 60s. While humidity levels in the southern most states can feel uncomfortable to visitors who are not accustomed to it, other areas are likely to have several lovely days of comfortable early summer temperatures. Visit June Weather Tables to find out about state-by-state average temperatures and average monthly rainfall in many popular southeastern destinations.

Atlantic Ocean Water Temperatures
Average June Atlantic Ocean water temperatures usually are around 70 degrees in Virginia, low to mid 70s in North Carolina, high 70s to low 80s in South Carolina and Georgia and low to mid 80s in Florida.

Packing for a June Visit
Pack lightweight casual summer clothing, plus a cotton sweater or two and a lightweight jacket or windbreaker for cooler evenings and the occasional cool day, especially in the early part of June. Also, remember to pack a raincoat or jacket. Mountain visitors should include a few additional cool weather garments.
