July Weather
There is no way around it. July throughout most of the Southeast is hot and humid, with slightly more comfortable temperatures along the coast and in the mountains. In many southeastern regions, July holds the annual record for the hottest average monthly temperatures and most rainfall. Severe thunderstorms occur fairly often, frequently in the hot afternoons. Visitors need to be prepared to cope with the heat by pacing outdoor activities, staying hydrated and avoiding excess sun exposure. Also, remember that July falls within the Hurricane season, which begins June 1 and lasts until November 30. Visit July Weather Tables to find out about state-by-state average temperatures and average monthly rainfall in many popular southeastern destinations.
Atlantic Ocean Water Temperatures
Average July Atlantic Ocean water temperatures are at around 76 degrees in Virginia, upper 70s and low 80s in North Carolina and South Carolina, and low to mid 80s in Georgia and Florida. Water temperatures tend to warm up by about 2 to 3 degrees from the beginning to the end of July.
Packing for a July Visit
Pack lightweight and preferably loose fitting casual summer clothing, plus a lightweight packable rain jacket. Shorts and casual shirts, bathing suits, flip flops, sunscreen, insect repellent and a light cotton sweater for the rare cool evening include the basics that most July visitors will need.
