By Sheridan Alexander, About.com

Zoo Atlanta - Overview and Highlights:
Zoo Atlanta is located in historic Grant Park near downtown Atlanta and Turner Field and encompasses almost 40 acres of forests and greenery. Naturalistic habitats are provided for Zoo Atlanta's more than 700 specimens, which represent over 200 animal species. The zoo environment is designed to represent several select destinations in the world including:
  • The Ford African Rain Forest - Four habitats on over 1.5 acres simulate the native environment of the gorillas and house one of North America's largest captive gorilla populations. The Living Treehouse exhibit is home to 15 species of beautiful African birds in an open-air aviary as well as some smaller primate species.

  • African Plains - The five-acre African Plains landscape simulates the terrain of the East African savanna and features lions, elephants, giraffe, black rhino, common waterbuck, bongos, yellow-backed duiker, Thomson’s gazelles and Grant’s zebras, as well as several African grassland birds.
  • The Asian Forest - The Arthur M. Blank Family Foundation Giant Panda Conservation Center and the orangutans' habitats are highlights of the Zoo Atlanta's Asian Forest. Other animals that can be seen in the Asian Forest include Asian small-clawed otters and Sumatran tigers. Photos of Mei Lan - Giant Panda Cub
