Description:

One of the highlights of a visit to the Outer Banks of North Carolina is attending a performance of the historical outdoor drama, The Lost Colony. The production provides wonderful family entertainment with educational value for school-aged family members, but is enjoyable for all ages as well.

The Story:

Performed in an outdoor theater under the stars at Fort Raleigh National Historic Site, The Lost Colony tells the story of the first, but ill-fated, English settlement in the new world. In 1587 a group of 117 men, women and children arrived on the shores of Roanoke Island and established a settlement on a site very near the current location of the outdoor theater. In one of America's greatest mysteries, all of the settlers had vanished by the time new supplies arrived in 1590.

The Drama:

Through drama, dance and song, The Lost Colony weaves the historical events into a fictional spectacle, which portrays the dreams, struggles and courage of the lost colonists. Written by North Carolina native and Pulitzer prize-winning playwright Paul Green, this historical drama has been entertaining and intriguing audiences since 1937.

The Season:

The 75th Anniversary Season of The Lost Colony runs from June 1, 2012 through August 23, 2012. Performances take place Monday through Saturday at 8:30 p.m. (No performance on Sundays or on July 4th.) Visitors should plan to arrive at least one half hour before the curtain.

In addition to attending the main performance, visitors are able to purchase tickets for backstage tours throughout the season. Tours, which are limited to 50 people, depart from the box office at 7:30 and last about one hour.
