The National Gingerbread House Competition is an annual holiday tradition at the Grove Park Inn Resort and Spa in Asheville, North Carolina. The competition kicks off in October with a workshop, which includes demonstrations and a Question and Answer session.
The official competition is held in November, attracting over 300 entries from 20 states. Entries are judged on overall appearance, originality and creativity, difficulty, precision, and consistency of theme. Except for the base, the entries must be constructed of edible materials. (See Photos)
Four categories are judged (categories and ages are subject to change):
Adult - Ages 18 and over
Teen - Ages 13 to 17
Youth - Ages 9 to 12
Child - Ages 5 to 8
After the final judging, many of the fanciful and unique entries remain on display at the Grove Park Inn Resort for public viewing through early January. Community viewing is available on Monday through Thursday and guests of the resort may view the display on any day of the week. New in 2009, a guided tour is also being offered. More about the tour.
For several years, it has been a tradition to transport the winning Gingerbread House and a selection of other entries to New York City for an appearance on Good Morning America. If you are hoping to see the winning masterpiece during your visit, be sure to check the television appearance schedule in order to avoid disappointment.
