Throughout many areas of the Southeast U.S., it is not unusual to see large and beautiful live oak trees, their aged and sprawling branches reminiscent of fairytale trees and enchanted forests. One of the most impressive live oaks, the Angel Oak Tree, is quite possibly the oldest living thing east of the Mississippi River. Although not documented, some estimates place the Angel Oak's age at 1500 years old.

Reported approximate dimensions of the Angel Oak Tree are:
  • Height - 65 feet tall
  • Circumference - 25.5 feet
  • Circumference of the largest limb - 11.5 feet
  • Length of the largest limb - 89 feet
  • Overall area of shade - 17,000 square feet
Visiting the Angel Oak Tree:

The Angel Oak Tree is located in Angel Oak Park on St. John's Island, South Carolina, about 12 miles from downtown Charleston. Angel Oak Park, which includes a picnic area and a small gift shop, is owned by the City of Charleston:
