Alabama Sales Tax Holidays

2008 Sales Tax Holiday: Friday, August 1 at 12:01 a.m. - Sunday, August 3 at midnight - 3 days

Beginning in August 2006, a sales tax holiday was enacted in Alabama. The sales tax holiday begins at 12:01 a.m. on the first Friday in August and ends at twelve midnight the following Sunday, giving shoppers the opportunity to purchase certain school supplies, computers and clothing free of state sales tax. Local sales tax may apply. Items included in the Alabama Sales Tax: Holiday:

  • Clothing - $100 or Less, per article of clothing

  • Computers, Computer Software, and School Computer Supplies - A single purchase with a sales price of $750 or Less

  • School Supplies, School Art Supplies and School Instructional Material - Sales Price of $50 or Less, per item (Noncommercial Purchases)

  • Books – Sales Price of $30 or Less, per book (Noncommercial Purchases)
A county or municipality may, with 30 days notice prior to the first full weekend of August, provide for the exemption of covered items or decide to not participate. Also, some counties and municipalities may adopt the Sales Tax Holiday for the current year only and some localities may adopt the Sales Tax Holiday on a limited basis, whereby only a portion of the locality's total sales and use tax levy is exempted.
