Ocracoke Island is "the favorite get-away beach" of Dr. Stephen P. Leatherman, the renowned beach expert also known as Dr. Beach. After holding a place on Dr. Beach's annual America's Best Beaches list in past years, Ocracoke Island, specifically Ocracoke Lifeguarded Beach, was named the 2007 national winner of America's Best Beaches. Once selected as the national winner, beaches are retired and do not appear on Dr. Beach's future lists.
Known for its laid back atmosphere, unadorned picturesque beauty, abundant wildlife and quaint village center, Ocracoke Island is located at the southern end of the North Carolina Outer Banks. The Pearl of the Outer Banks, Ocracoke is a great place to leave the worries of hectic daily life behind and spend some time taking an early morning swim before breakfast, walking barefoot at the edge of the surf and listening to the music of the ocean.
