It is believed that the ancestors of the Ocracoke ponies arrived with Spanish explorers DeSoto or Cortez, survived from shipwrecked vessels off the coast in the Graveyard of the Atlantic or were part of Sir Walter Raleigh's expeditions to Roanoke Island.
