On September 6, 2006 at 4:51 p.m. a nine-year old female giant panda, Lun Lun, pronounced Loon Loon, delivered a cub at Zoo Atlanta. The father of the cub is an eight-year-old male named Yang Yang. Both parents are at Zoo Atlanta on a 10-year research loan from China.
On December 15, 2006, the cub's name was announced during a ceremony that was held as part of the 100 Day Naming Celebration according to tradition in many parts of China. The name Mei Lan, which translates to Atlanta Beauty, was selected by the public, receiving 22% of 57,015 votes cast for ten pre-determined names in an online poll hosted by Zoo Atlanta in conjunction with the Atlanta Journal-Constitution.
On January 12, 2007, when the cub was 128 days old, Zoo Atlanta announced Mei Lan's media debut and limited public preview days. On February 23, 2007, Mei Lan made her long awaited official public debut.
