Although Bald Head Island is located only two nautical miles away from the North Carolina mainland, the island's quiet serenity and unhurried pace feel oceans away from the complexities of daily life. My first and only previous visit to Bald Head Island was many years ago, when private vacation houses, even then mostly quite large, were sparsely dotted here and there, the golf course had opened just a few years earlier and island-wide telephone service was a thing of the future.
Today, there are many more houses and two upscale club facilities. There is a new ferry terminal on the mainland and on-island services include a well-stocked grocery store, more dining and shopping options, as well as a day spa. As during my earlier visit, cars are not allowed on Bald Head Island, and the absence of them has the effect of enhancing the harmonious music and chatter of the island's natural environment and its wildlife inhabitants.
