Whether you are looking for a romantic getaway or a family vacation, the Westin Savannah Harbor is an ideal location. It is situated on the exclusive Hutchinson Island, just a free ferry ride across the Savannah River from the famous River Street.

Your room will have a spectacular view, with a display of the river and beautiful, historic downtown Savannah on the front side or the award winning Troon-managed golf course in the back. Either choice is good for nature lovers, who might spot an occasional dolphin or alligator while gazing out the window.

Review of the Westin Savannah Harbor Golf Resort and Spa

When I first arrived at the hotel I was immediately introduced to the very friendly staff. Check-in for my stay was quick and simple. The lobby was gorgeous and tastefully decorated, and upon entering I noticed the signature white tea scent.

The hallway on my floor could have used a few touch ups, but it was still very nice. I was dying to swan-dive into the so called Heavenly Bed and, rest assured, the bed lived up to its name. The room was supplied with Starbucks and Tazo tea along with a mini bar, so I could have stayed there all weekend. The one disappointment was that there are very few television channels in the guest rooms. There are movies you can buy of course, but if you want to watch any sports or news you have to go to the bar where they have satellite.

If you wish to wander around the downtown area of Savannah, (and who wouldn’t?) there is a complimentary ferry service that will take you on a 90 second ride across the Savannah River to the city’s most famous street, historic River Street. However, you could spend an entire weekend on the island. The Troon-managed golf course designed by Robert Cupp and Sam Snead, Greenbrier Spa, Reebok gym and tennis courts are located a short distance away from the actual hotel. Convenient shuttles run back and forth from 7 a.m. until 9 p.m. when the gym closes. I am not a golfer, but I asked to borrow a golf cart to take a tour around the course. It was amazing to see all the wildlife: there are water birds, rabbits, armadillos, and alligators. There are also a lot of bugs, so remember to take along some bug spray.

The Greenbrier Spa

The Greenbrier Spa, the only sister spa of the original Greenbrier Spa of White Sulphur Springs, West Virginia, has the best atmosphere of the entire hotel. The staff is very friendly and helpful. You are given a bathrobe, a complementary cocktail and about fifteen minutes to relax in the Quite Room before your services. The extensive spa service menu offers an array of luxurious treatments and services, including their signature Greenbrier treatment, which starts with a soak in the legendary White Sulphur minerals from West Virginia springs.

Hotel Dining

There are four choices for dining on the property. The more formal restaurant, Aqua Star, is open for breakfast, lunch and dinner. I ate dinner here once, where I had the Savannah Harbor pot pie. This untraditional pot pie is a delicious seafood concoction. It is a mix of crab, lobster, shrimp and scallops baked in a pastry shell. I had a table with a lovely view by the window which faces Bay Street.

For lunch I opted for the clubhouse on the golf course. It provided a beautiful view, and lunch was surprisingly good. I had a bowl of lobster bisque which could have been a meal in itself. I also ordered the blackened grouper sandwich with sweet potato chips. If there is one meal you must try here at the Westin it is this one. The fish was perfectly cooked and the spicy remoulade was good enough to eat on its own. I was surprised by the homemade sweet potato chips. Some were a bit soggy but most were crisp and delicious.

Additional Comments

After lunch I went to the pool at the hotel and took a nap in one of the hammocks. Caution, the Georgia sun is not a joke. Bring sun block. I left the Westin reluctantly. There is so much to do in the hotel and the surrounding area that my advice is to plan for a nice long visit.
