Labor Day Weekend begins the fun apple festival season in the Southeast. Here is a round-up of some of the festival highlights and special apple events for the month of September.

September Apple Festivals

  • An Apple a Day Open House at Peaks of Otter Winery
    Bedford, Virginia - August 29 - 30 September 5 - 6, 12 - 13, 19 - 20, 26 - 27, 2009
    Enjoy eating and sampling many varieties of apples and taste Fruit of the Farm wine, plus kids can enjoy seeing farm animals.

  • North Carolina Apple Festival
    Hendersonville, North Carolina - September 4 - 7, 2009
    The North Carolina Apple Festival, which is held annually on Labor Day Weekend, recognizes the apple and the apple industry in Henderson County and North Carolina. Events include entertainment, a Labor Day parade, street dance, vendors and more. One of North Carolina's most celebrated festivals, the North Carolina Apple Festival marks its 62nd consecutive year in 2007.

  • South Carolina Apple Festival
    Westminster, South Carolina - September 8 - 12, 2009
    Beginning the week after Labor Day and running through the following weekend, the South Carolina Apple Festival celebrates the beginning of apple harvest season in Oconee County, the largest apple-producing area in the state. The annual festival has drawn thousands of visitors to the Westminster area since its beginning in 1961. Festival activities include arts and crafts and food vendors, kiddie rides, an apple pie baking contest, entertainment, a popular two-day rodeo and much more.

    Shenandoah National Park, Virginia - September 12, 2009
    Freshly made apple butter, apple candy, apple art, apple crafts - apples are just everywhere.

  • Apple Pickin' Jubilee
    Ellijay, Georgia - September 12 - 13, 19 - 20, 26 - 27, 2009
    Pick your own apples, follow a nature trail filled with scenes from nursery rhymes and fairy tales, take a mule drawn wagon ride and enjoy live Entertainment including cloggers and country bands. Kids will enjoy the John Deere Derby, a pedal tractor trike track and farm games like apple bobbin' and corn shelling.

  • Stribling Orchard - Applefest
    Markham, Virginia - September 13, 2009
    Enjoy local vendors, caramel apples, live bluegrass music and more.

  • Clay County Golden Delicious Festival
    Clay, West Virginia - September 17 - 20, 2009
    Events kick off on Thursday evening and continue throughout the weekend. Highlights include vendors, amusement rides, lots of entertainment and contests, antique car and motorcycle shows, a parade, chili cook-off and bake-off, 5K run, quilt show, fireworks and more .

  • Annual Boones Mill Apple Festival
    Boones Mill, Virginia - September 19, 2009
    Plenty of food, fun, crafts, an art show, entertainment and fun and games for children of all ages. (Rain date is Saturday, September 26, 2009)

  • Annual Apple Harvest Festival
    Winchester, Virginia - September 19 - 20, 2009
    Enjoy arts and crafts, ethnic foods, the Virginia State Apple Butter Making Championship, a regional apple pie baking contest, Ole Tyme Apple Growers Exhibit and more at Jim Barnett Park in the heart of apple country.

  • Casey County Apple Festival
    Liberty, Kentucky - September 19 - 26, 2009
    Head to the streets of downtown Liberty where there will be entertainment, a carnival, music, pageants, over 200 vendors, and a giant 10 foot apple pie on the last weekend of September. Other fun events include a parade and dog show on Friday evening and an antique engine display on Saturday.

  • Fall Farm Fun Festival at Marker-Miller Orchards Farm Market
    Winchester, Virginia - September 26 - 27, 2009
    Pick your own apples from the tree and browse around the beautiful countryside of Winchester. Hot dogs and country ham sandwiches available for lunch, plus scenic wagon rides for all ages and the cow train for the kids.
