Each winter, from late December until mid-March, something huge happens off the coast of Virginia Beach, Virginia. Majestic humpback whales and fin whales follow a migration route that brings these magnificent oceanic mammals to a prime winter whale watching destination in the coastal waters near Virginia Beach.

The Virginia Aquarium & Marine Science Center's education-based Winter Wildlife Boat Trips offer a chance to see these fascinating creatures in their natural habitat, as well as harbor seals, harbor porpoises, sea birds and more. For a great three-day getaway, including accommodations for two nights, Winter Wildlife Boat Trip vacation packages are offered.

While whale sightings vary in number each year, last winter was a great year for Virginia Beach whale watchers and, so far, this year is looking like it could be another banner year. Since the Virginia Aquarium's Winter Wildlife Boat Trips for this season started in late December, humpback whales have been spotted on 24 of 27 outings. In addition to the impressive number of sightings, the whales have been exhibiting many of their unique behaviors, thrilling observers with breaching, lobtailing, spyhopping, bubble netting and more.
