The Pentagon Memorial - September 11th Traffic Alerts for Arlington, Virginia

Visitors to Arlington, Virginia on September 11, 2008 should be aware of the following traffic alerts related to the new Pentagon Memorial Dedication Ceremony. Several intersections in the area will be closed for the dedication ceremony held at the Pentagon. The ceremony is for invited guests only, however, large-screen viewings will be available for the public at three Arlington locations.

Road and intersection closures, as announced by the Arlington County Police Department include:

From 3 a.m. to 2 p.m.:
  • Washington Blvd Eastbound closed at I-395 and Columbia Pike
  • Washington Blvd Westbound from Memorial Bridge
  • Washington Blvd Westbound from I-395
  • Washington Blvd Westbound from Hayes Street
  • I-395 Northbound HOV–no access to Washington Blvd
  • I-395 Southbound to Pentagon South Parking
  • Columbia Pike closed from Joyce Street to Pentagon South Parking
Closed at 3 a.m. and will open when possible:
  • S. Fern Street from Army Navy Drive to the Pentagon
  • S. Eads Street from Army Navy Drive to the Pentagon
  • Rotary Road closed throughout Pentagon South parking
  • North /South Connector road at Pentagon
  • I-395 Northbound HOV–access to Eads Street, must exit to Army Navy Drive
Arlington County will offer large-screen viewings of the Pentagon Memorial Ceremony at several locations including:
  • 8:00 a.m. - Lobby, Courthouse Plaza, 2100 Clarendon Blvd
  • 9:00 a.m. - Auditorium, Central Library, 1015 North Quincy Street
  • 9:00 a.m. - Shirlington Library, 2786 S. Arlington Mill Drive
The Pentagon Memorial will open to the public at 7 p.m.

Wish I could see it – severely disabled now, can’t travel, but was working at an APS elementary school a short distance away from the Pentagon on 9-11.

The little make shift memorial that was there at the Pentagon before I moved away, on the hillside, was very moving.
